A smart lock is nearly always for someone other than the owner. The housekeeper who comes to a Dominican house on Tuesdays and Fridays. The gardener who needs the side gate and nothing beyond it. The guest house in Lucas Valley lent to family for a month. The condo at Loch Lomond let by the week. The landlord in the Canal who would rather change a code from the sofa than drive across town. Marin Lock & Key installs Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, August, Level and Lockly, along with the retrofit units that leave your present deadbolt and cylinder in the door.
Before any of the electronics matter, the bolt must run without effort. A motor has none of the persuasion a hand has, and a bolt that scrapes its strike drains the batteries and then stops on a school morning, so the strike is adjusted first. Then the lock goes on, the cylinder is keyed to the key already on your ring where the model allows it, and the app is set up on your own phone rather than the technician's. The first codes are entered at the door with you. Wi-Fi is measured at the door itself, because a router at the far end of an Eichler seldom reaches the entry, and a bridge is added when the signal falls short. Matter and HomeKit pairing is done if the house already runs on them.
Installation is named between $185 and $469. Labor on a lock you already own, going onto a door with standard preparation, is $185. Supplying the lock, adding a bridge, replacing a handleset together with the deadbolt, or adapting a retrofit unit to an old mortise door reaches $469. The $89 service call is inside the figure. A pairing that drags because a firmware update is slow does not alter the number.
You call and describe the door: which lock you have or want, and whether the door carries a modern deadbolt or an old mortise set. The full figure is named. The van leaves and calls from the gate, after the text with the name and the window. Pair: the strike, the mounting, the keying, the pairing, the first codes, a signal test, and a walk through adding and deleting a code yourself. The receipt repeats the figure, card or tap at the door.
“I keep house for a family in Lucas Valley, and they asked me to arrange a keypad lock for the guest house before their visitors arrived. The call named $412 for the lock and the pairing, with the drive up the valley inside it. The technician fitted it in the existing bore, set a code for the visitors that expires on its own, and reset the gate keypad while he was there. Four stars only because the gate keypad manual arrived by email two days later rather than in the folder with the receipt, as I had asked. The lock itself has been faultless.”
Every job is priced from the list below. The full figure is named on the call, before the van leaves the yard, and the receipt repeats it.

FAQ
Smart Lock Installation: quick answers
The condo rules at Peacock Gap say nothing on the outside of the door may change. Is a smart lock still possible?+
Yes, with a retrofit unit that swaps only the thumbturn on the inside. The outside of the door, the cylinder and the key the HOA holds stay exactly as they were, and the original thumbturn goes back on in a few minutes when the unit is sold.
A housekeeper, a gardener and a dog walker each come on different days. One code or three?+
Three, each on its own schedule. The housekeeper's code works Tuesdays and Fridays, the gardener's only on the days the beds are done, the dog walker's at noon. When someone stops coming you delete one code rather than rekeying a door. Keep the mechanical key somewhere sensible as the fallback for a flat battery.
Can a smart lock go on the sliding door of our Terra Linda Eichler?+
Not the usual kind, since a slider has no deadbolt for it to drive. There are keypad latches made for patio doors, and they are fitted where the frame allows. More often the answer is a smart deadbolt on the front door and a pin and a bar on the slider, and the technician says which suits your door on the call.
