The long spine of Fourth Street from the Miracle Mile end to the freeway: shops and restaurants in brick and stucco fronts, the Rafael Film Center, the Mission a block up the hill, apartments on the floors above the shops, and the city garages a block off the street on either side.

The oldest neighborhood in the city, on the slope south of Fourth Street: Victorian and Craftsman houses from the 1900s through the 1920s, deep porches, front doors with a glass panel and a mortise knob set, houses owned by one family for forty years, and streets that go quiet by nine.

The large older houses on the curving streets around Dominican University: 1910s to 1930s houses set back behind hedges, pedestrian gates on a keyed latch, driveway gates on an operator, guest houses and detached garages, and households whose keys are held by a housekeeper, a gardener and a property manager.

The flat streets north of the hill: Eichlers with an atrium and a slab front door, ranch houses from the 1950s and 60s with an attached garage, sliding glass doors onto every yard, medical suites around Kaiser, the Northgate lots, and Marinwood further up 101 with the same houses and a community center.

The streets west of downtown and up toward the ridge: houses from the 1930s through the 1950s built into the slope, a garage cut in below the house with a door up into it, a flight of steps from the street, side gates onto a narrow path, and Fairhills higher up where the streets narrow and turn.

The flat blocks east of 101 along the canal: two- and three-story apartment buildings from the 1960s and 70s with a buzzer panel and a carport, small houses on the streets toward the water, corner markets and repair shops, a renting population, and a lot of calls between six and ten in the evening.

Everything along Point San Pedro Rd east of the city: the houses around the golf course, the condos at Loch Lomond and the Marina with an HOA and a dock gate, the large houses along the water and above it, and China Camp at the end of the road. One road in, and the estimate says so.

The valley running west from 101 along Lucas Valley Rd: Eichlers at the lower end, then ranches and gated houses on large lots, driveway gates with a keypad and an intercom, detached garages, guest houses and barns, a cell signal that fades past the last streetlight, and the longest arrival in the city.
